The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Thursday it had thwarted a plot to topple the Michigan state government and kidnapped its governor, Gretchen Whitmer, and that it had a convincing case to charge six men with a failed operation that involved contact with an armed group.
Details of the operation will be announced at a press conference for law enforcement officials at 1 pm in Grand Rapids, attended by State Justice Minister Dana Nasell and senior prosecutors.
The FBI had initially received information that a group of individuals “are discussing the forcible removal of certain elements in the government and law enforcement authorities” in early 2020, according to a written statement from Special Agent Richard Traske that the office revealed today, Thursday.
The alleged plot includes contact with one of the groups whose name is not mentioned in the statement.
Trask said that there is a compelling case to charge six men, namely Adam Fox, Barry Croft, T Garban, Caleb Franks, Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta, with conspiracy to kidnap Whitmire, who belongs to the Democratic Party and often criticizes Republican President Donald Trump.
Trask said Fox wrote in September in a coded conversation that he did not want a final training session in the last week of October because that would not leave him sufficient time to carry out the kidnapping before the November 3 election.
"The group agreed to use the time remaining until the last training in raising funds for explosives and other supplies," Trask wrote in his testimony.
